Dogwoods

As I was being driven home from the hospital Friday, I observed the striking blooming of the Dogwoods. Yes, I was in the hospital but this is a better story for now. Consider that a Dogwood is a scrawny tree just above the undergrowth but under the Oaks and Pines. During most of the year it’s not much to see. However, when their season comes they shout a message in white blooms that gets your attention. For me it was message of new hope in a difficult time.

Someone at church said it was signal for the beginning of the crappie and bream fishing season. It is also about the time for the opening of the MLB season. So we have sports and fishing involved in the season. I’ll forego the legend of the Dogwood which I’m sure someone will supply along the way. We cannot escape the obvious season of Resurrection Sunday. They correspond to Passover, the Passion of Christ, and the Resurrection of Christ.

Here then is the message of the Dogwood: We have hope of eternal life by faith in the resurrected Jesus Christ. “Did not our hearts burn within us…? (Luke 24:32),” was my feeling too as I saw the awesome and wonderful display of our Lord speaking to me from the blooming Dogwoods.
