Freedom is a concept some people relish and others seek. I’m amazed at what
people think freedom is. In the late 60’s, especially 1967, teens and young people
sought freedom by means of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll. However, they often
found bondage to these seeming pleasures and ended up with a life of misery.
College students became enamored with Marx, Mao, and Castro. But
communism turned to be blood, death, and destruction for millions. Wars were
fought. But still no freedom was found.
Today kids seemed drawn to celebrities and their attractiveness. They sing their
songs, collect autographs, pin up their image on bedroom walls. Others think that
if they can strike it rich somehow by the lottery or a get-rich-quick scheme they
can be free. People race here and there only to be disappointed and sad.
Many think if they have control over everyone around them they will feel safe and
have ultimate freedom. Or, some think if they need to have control of themselves
in all their behavior, they will at least feel free. Religion does this for some
people. When it’s all over they still don’t have it.
God’s word has the answer in 2Corinthians 3:17, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and
where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” God’s Presence by His Spirit
comes when we walk by faith in Jesus our Lord. It’s about relationship. Our
relationship of faith in Jesus allows Him to transform us into the free spirit we
were meant to be.
