Life or death?

The mother of a convicted murderer was observed by me briefly this morning on a cable outlet dealing with law enforcement. The young man had committed a horrible crime. The jury found him guilty. In the next phase of the trial the jury had to decide if the man was to receive the death penalty or life in prison. The convicted young man had little to commend him, but his mother who said “We should not just write him off and kill him.” What did he deserve? Death! Life in prison!

Having been in a position to consider such, as a mental health counselor for death row, in the past, I have no stomach to kill a person. But what about justice for the one who was murdered? I’m glad I am not in a position to pass such judgment. Or, am I in just such a position? There are multitudes of people all around us on a broad highway to the ultimate justice of the second death mentioned in Revelation 20:14-15, “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

Whew! That’s the bad news. But we have the good news. Jesus took our hell so we could go to

heaven. That’s the message of the Gospel: Christ died for our sins, was laid in a tomb, rose to life on the third day, and by faith in Him we can have our names written in the book of life. Maybe before someone finds his or herself in the position of the young man above, they need to hear and receive the message of the Gospel today.
