The name of Jesus

Listening to a speaker share, as he started his presentation, I heard and understood him to offer a disclaimer by saying something like this, hesitatingly, “I don’t want to offend anyone, but, what I have to say will have,” hesitatingly, reluctantly, “God in it.” I found this interesting. Now, he was speaking to a variety of people who were well educated with differing opinions about the subject of “God.” I suspect he was a Christian and a church attendee. I’m not trying to be too critical of the fellow because I enjoyed his presentation. How is it that we have found ourselves in a place today such that we must offer an apology for faith in Jesus?

I’ve heard professional athletes, and others, criticized for expressing their faith publically. The apostle Peter admonished us to “…be ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear….” (1Peter 3:15). So when we are confronted in a public setting where our faith would be in question, we should say so, but not in an arrogant or oppositional manner.

The bigger issue has to do with the name of Jesus. The fellow said God several times but never

mentioned Jesus. Jesus, Himself, taught that if we ask anything in His name, He would do it. (John 14:13). We have the authority of the King of kings and Lord of lords, whose name created the world and is ours to be saved, healed, and delivered. We may use that name to move mountains and calm storms. That name is Jesus!
